See its weird, i used to have a pair of Paiste 13" 302 hats which were AMAZING! And ive played an old Solar ride which was a pleasure to the ears too. Also a Paiste 400 power crash which i loved.
But when it comes to crashes & splashes these days i would touch brass with a bargepole!!
On cymbal talk, anyone heard of Amedia? Completly hand made turkish cymbals.
I think im switching to using them pretty soon (part of an endorsement deal). Really excited, they make some great sounding stuff, thier ~Thrace series is like AAs but with more character and a bit brighter!

Cymbals are strange creatures - especially when you are looking at the cheaper end of the market (and £60 for a hats / crash / ride set is definately at that end, whether second hand or not).
When I bought my Mapex kit form Drumwright, it came with a set of Sabian Solars. Brass, and not very nice. However, the hats were ok, and if set up right with the correct amount of tension on the clutch, gave a nice sharp sizzle. The ride hasa fery short decay, although pings well when played with nylon tipped sticks. And some places (especially small venues which are very 'live' like the Cellar Bar in Bracknell, which is stone floor and brick walls/ceiling) call for much less sustain than larger venues can cope with. The less said about the crash the better - I played it nce in a practice, then never again.
Zyns can be like that - some are real good, some are not worth bothering with. And buying second hand low-end cymbals unheard is always a risk. Better to identify a budget that you can live with, work out what you need, and then go to the shop and hit a few - drumwright have always been very good at this part of the process.
if you are buying better (read : more expensive) named brand cymbals, there's a more consistent standard across the range, and it's easier to buy unheard, because you know what you will get. Still best to try before you buy, but less risky.
Dunno if you bought the Zyn's yet or not, but at sixty quid they are worth a punt - you could probably flog them on for more if they turn out to be not what you want.
Using the rhythm method, I can bang all night long.....
Mapex, Zildjian, Vic Firth, Remo... and for my favorite Tosco crash - RIP, old son....

Yeah, the 5 star super Zyn's were quiet good for their day, they are now made in China, whether or not they sound ok i wouldn't have a clue, i suppose the Chinese do have a couple of thousand years experiance in cymbal making though,, having said that, i'll stick to me Sabians

Wow, I haven't heard of Zyn in years......as far as I remember they we're half decent in years gone by.....couldn't possibly quote on today's quality....

I have a pair of 5 star super zyn 15" hi-hats and like them a lot. I H ave no idea how much they cost or how old they are! There seem to be a few different zyns knocking around on ebay.
could someone give me some background info on super zyns?

I think Mr Wheatabix either doesn't know what he is talking about, or is not old enough to talk about Zyn cymbals.
Zyn cymbals, especially from the 60's and the early 70's, were good. Whether they were the Zyn and Super Zyn ranges, or the Zyn 2 Star and Zyn 5 Star ranges, the Super Zyn's and the Zyn 5 Stars could just about hold their own against Zildian Avedis.
A good vintage Zyn cymbal today is streets ahead of the cheapo brass and B8 cymbals made by Zildjian, Sabian, and Paiste.
I cannot and will not comment on the latest cymbals which now bear the name of "Zyn" and which I believe are made in China!
Me? I use Zildjian K's, although still often dig out my old Zyns. |

Zyn Cymbals are not very good at all they are just the basic cymbal for a new beginer.
If you have the money and are taking drummig seariously then spend a bit more and get a decent brand (Sabian Paiste ect) Then when you have real money to spend then the top of the range in those makes are class. I use a fast number of top cymbals Sabian AAX HHX evolution HH Paiste signature full crashes A custom Ziljians I have loads to suite what type of music I play at that time. Hope this small insite is ok. |

Theyre ok. the cymbals at my school are Zyn. they sound ok, probably rate the same, or if a lil bit better than, sabian solars.

Apparently they used to be really good, i bought a zyn cymbal second hand from Drumwright and i have to say its really good IMO The only set back was that the cymbal hole wasnt wide enough to go on a cymbal stand
